Organisation Profile

The organization was started by Habiib Seruga with the aim of improving people’s livelihood (Bunyaruguru community). This was due to environmental degradation which was at a high speed. We started by planting trees in a small land secured from forestry department. We wanted Bunyaruguru to be greener as it used to be and we have achieved this.

Some of the activities we carried out included making nursery beds for eucalyptus trees; planting trees and introducing the use of energy saving stores.

Since BECA was founded in 2003, there has been a great change in the environment and people’s lives. People have increased on their household incomes, saved the natural forest.

The current programs undertaken include Human rights and good governance. The local communities have also learnt how to conserve the environment by planting their own forests. They have also learnt how to care for their banana plantations and to use natural resources sustainably for improved livelihood. The organization has increased its membership in the last 9 years and still moving on. BECA still needs more support in capacity building of its members of UNNGOF.

Some of the challenges or difficulties in our work as an organisation have been the limited resources; working with Local leaders who are not cooperative to NGOs; political interference and the high level of donor dependency.

We want to acknowledge and thank UNDP through the Small Grants Program for the grant given to BECA in 2005; WACSOF for capacity building; Uganda National NGO Forum and LIPRO Uganda.
