Organisation Profile

Build Africa Uganda (BAU) is affiliated to Build Africa (BA), an international development organization with 30 years experience working in some of the poorest regions of the world. BA works through partner organizations, sharing a jointly developed mission, vision, values, objectives and operating procedures.  BA started its operation in Uganda in 1996 and during the last 14 years has focused on youth education and enterprise development.  The scope of programmes in recent years has included support to universal primary education, vocational training, agricultural enterprise, village savings and loans associations and HIV prevention amongst youth.

BAU currently operates in eastern Uganda in the districts of: Kumi, Ngora, and Bukedea whilst in south western Uganda it operates in Masindi, Kiryandongo and Buliisa districts.

Our vision is to see that every young person in Africa has the opportunity to fulfil their potential and to make a difference. Our mission is to help young people in Africa escape poverty through increased opportunities in education and enterprise.

BAU focuses on two major sectors: primary education and income/enterprise programming.

We aim to improve the quality of education by building the capacity of rural schools, communities and local government to overcome the barriers faced. We support them to identify and implement solutions to the most pressing problems, including improvements to the learning environment, the quality of teaching and learning, and parental involvement in school governance.  On the other hand, we aim to overcome youth poverty by improving access to income opportunities through rural enterprise development.

BAU mainstreams HIV/AIDS in education and income interventions. Working with partners, BAU focuses on prevention of HIV/AIDS amongst pupils, parents, teachers and other duty bearers at the school level. We have a very good HIV/AIDS prevention approach that integrates work in the school with that of the immediate community.

BAU seeks to develop innovative, sustainable and appropriate, high impact development solutions that meet the needs of the poor from these communities. We strive to facilitate network-building, exchange of skills and experience with others to achieve strong and effective results.

Our programme principles are: relevance, partnership, participation, sustainability and learning.
